The Next New Thing

The next new thing? I find it difficult to come up with something that has not been thought of. So much has been innovated and advanced that it is difficult to keep up with the media and know exactly what exists and what does not. 

If I had to create a new form of media I would focus on the corporate life. My idea would be to take social networking to the next level and centralize it in a working environment. For internal company purposes only of course. it would be used not only for employees to communicate but would be used to share files and store documents as a way to save memory on the pc's considering some documents are VERY large. I believe this is important and would benefit corporate communication because it will be much more organized and centralized. It will be the target location where employees share and communicate. They would be able to provide feedback, edit documents, as well as personalize it and create personal and professional profiles. Currently, companies use many different programs, each with a different functionality. But this would become a central point.

P2P Sharing

       File sharing is the sharing or exchange of files between people using computers connected to the internet. The term covers both the making available of the file, for instance on a file-sharing service such as Kaaza, Napster, Limewire, etc, and the downloading of that file from the internet to a computer. It has gotten pretty big over the years now that technology is so important to us.  You can share files in a few different ways, like web based hyperlinks, through computer networks or majority of new technological devices
          P2P (peer-to-peer) sharing is a way of sharing files between two users.   P2P sharing eliminates the need for a central server. It allows all computers to communicate and share resources (files). According to the article “Filesharing Joins The Mainstream” by Chris Nuttall, the most popular website for P2P sharing is BitTorrent.  With BitTorrent, you can download files that are extremely big from another user.   BitTorrent works so well because it downloads files so fast.   With P2P file sharing, the more people that download the same file, the faster it typically downloads.  

WIKI - How the New Media are Used in Businesses

My assigned wiki topic is “How the New Media are Used in Businesses”. For this, I am researching things about how new media is being used by business and the outcomes. Have businesses benefitted from new media or has it corrupted business? I will use many of the same articles I did for my paper of privacy and how it is a purposeful loss. I have found many great articles mentioning how not only small businsses but also large corporations use new media. Not only from a business perspective but personal as well. I will discuss different examples, and different outcomes to this.

Advice

Baruch College implements new media in a little number of ways. There are hire staff who use social networking sites to send out important information. Some departments make Facebook accounts (as well as other sites) to announce news to the faculty and students in order to provide them with relevant updates that might interest them. I believe it would be a good idea for Baruch to begin using more of new media. So far they have been doing a good job adapting to the changes but because new media is the triumph of our generation and it will only grow, Baruch should grow with it. it would be interesting if Baruch created a website very similar to the typical social networking sites and allow us to converse with students and faculty, provide feedback on classes, clubs, activities, broken escalators..it would also allow students to get more familiar with their professors and classmates because they get to know them on a more personal level; see who they have in common with or who can help them out with homework. It would benefit those individuals who are introverts and make communication more simpler.  

Privacy

Social Networking has most certainly become a triumph of our generation. The majorities of individuals in your class, at work, on the streets, or even at a bar have a Facebook account, a Twitter account, or can be found on other networking sites. Every couple of years, social networking seems to change and become a bigger part of our daily lives. We dedicate so much of our time to these websites (such as Facebook, Twitter, etc) that we have become to a certain degree dependent to them.  We have become so accustomed to virtual relationships that we somewhat lost value in person to person relationships. Now-a-days, we can find and track friends from any location, at any time via our mobile devices, computers, media players, etc. These are all components of new media. Social networking will take over all forms of communication and a virtual world is something that we must understand and use to our advantage. Risks that might be involved will come from our lack of privacy but if we learn to manage this issue and adapt to the virtual world, we can have a more content future.

My Term Paper

My topic is Social Networking: A Purposeful Loss of Privacy. I chose this topic because I felt it necessary to point out just how risky these sites can be. Althought they are risky, there are benefits to these risks if everything is done properly and cautiously. It is important thatr people of all ages and all backgrounds are aware of these risks but also try to adjust themselves to the new virtual world. Social networking is a brand new for of communication and like all forms of communication, it is good. Therefore I would suggest everyone give it a try but not lose all discretion and disclose all private information.

For my paper, I have read many articles that focus on the cons and pros of these sites. I have focused on who these sites benefit, what the purpose is and what the risks are. Unfortunately many risks are involved with these sites but the plus side is that it can be controlled by individuals. With a little precaution and awareness, we do not have anything to worry about. Privacy issues and concerns have been focused on since these sites had been created.

After doing research for my paper, I have concluded that social networking sites are a purposeful loss of privacy. It is purposeful to users, organizations, companies, groups, and many more. For students and teachers, with all of features it has to offer, the virtual world is the ideal medium that has the ability to improve classroom education. It allows students to keep in touch with each other, get to know each other on a more personal level and become more comfortable around each other. Organizations and companies benefit from this because they are able to enhance their knowledge of individuals that could be potential hires. In today’s tough economy, any form of safety or any procedure that will allow a company to protect its reputation is vital and should be thoroughly fulfilled. Connecting with others is very important since our world has become virtual. The essential goal of social networking sites is connecting people. Individuals can add others as friends and can immediately begin chatting and sharing information. Many take advantage of these sites and use it to advance their networking skill which is becoming more and more functional and essential.

Creativity and New Media

Above is an Avatar that I have created on Meez.com The website is fairly flexible and you are able to create characters of all sorts using a significant number of themes. I chose to make my avatar look somewhat like myself with a little kick to it. First I chose her face shape, eyes, nose and lips to match to mine as much as possible. Once I have chosen that, I was able to dress her. I had to choose from so many outfits, costumes, etc. It is Halloween after all, so they are trying to focus on that as much as possible. Once I was able to put her outfit together, then comes the shoes and then the background. Because of all the options we have, we are able to use out creativity as much as we would like to which is an extraordinary thing. I think my Avatar came out nice and I am sure yours will too.
